Series "Finding Now" 2024-25

My current work is a response to my unending interest in the smallest of details found in nature. I am inspired by the growth patterns of flora. They provide us with a visual representation of the transformations that occur throughout various lifecycles. There is such beauty that can emerge from the complexity of both living and dying.

In this series, I reference these influences through the development of deeply textural, colourful, and complex clay works paying particular attention to light and shadow. The endless possibility of patterns and configurations I find exhilarating as they materialize through various stages of construction, deconstruction, and finish. By exemplifying the mass confusion of root balls, stems, and leaves, I am able to connect them to form purpose and direction, culminating in blooms at various stages of growth.

Drawing inspiration from botanical illustrations, my colour palette was derived from the chromolithography process the Victorian’s developed. The works themselves, reference various plant life growth, seemingly removed from nature while still full of potential. The work poses the question, “Does potential still exist or has it been forever paused?”

My work is evocative of nature, of growth patterns, and the cycle of life. It presents as both inert object and living specimen; an expression of the possibilities of clay and glaze yet seemingly organic.

I am fascinated by the existence of fungi and slime molds that beautifully emerge from decay: a place of loss where growth is not only possible but perhaps unavoidable.

I reference these influences through the development of deeply textural, colourful, and complex works paying particular attention to light and shadow, dawn and dusk. Through the intentional suggestion of light peaking through the saturation of darkness, the work pushes us to question, “Is this a beginning, or an end?”

2019 Patterns of Growth

My current work approaches the subtleties of living, defined by form, movement, colour and texture. The exploration of complexity and uniqueness of movement within my forms fuels my momentum and motivation to create. Each work, through the contours of the body and the placement of the appendages, captures movements which are compelling in their peculiarity. Highly textural and seemingly organic surfaces are utilized to invoke a belief we are experiencing a kind of mimicry of life. In my attempt to fix a moment or movement in time, I am interested in how we perceive and assign qualities of both the object and the organic to the works through our perception of life.

I have found grounding in the living world around me, emulating the patterns of growth in the natural world and exploring the inherent movement found within these systems. As I consider what makes a form seem alive, I am pushed to contemplate changes found throughout a life cycle. I am driven to create rules of growth and movement. It is the creation of these systems and the environments in which they exist that provides me with endless inspiration.

Retro Deco Collection

I have always been aware of the connection between each form I create and the environment it will exist in. I consider the homes it will inhabit and the hands that will hold it - the relationship between the vessel and its user inspires my forms and surface. Deceptively simple objects offer sophisticated moments where fingers discover defined texture between exposed clay and art deco themed glazes, lips rest on a smoothly glazed portions of otherwise bare rims, and thumbs settle into a soft indentation found on a hand pulled handle. These intimate moments offer quiet contemplation in our otherwise busy lives.
